Landmark
Corner of Downtown Niles.
Of the 54 lots platted in 1834, James and
Warren Heaton owned 23 parcels including the lot at the intersection
of South Main Street and West James Street (now Park Avenue).
From 1842-1865 the building, located on this
site, served as a hotel. It became the Harris family residence
from 1865-1905. From then until 1920 it was used for various businesses
and storage. At that time it was sold by the Harris heirs to the
Niles Trust Company and was demolished in 1929.
It was to become the site of the first Niles
mini-skyscraper–The Niles Trust Company Bank Building.
The construction of the mini skyscraper by the
Niles Trust Company on the site of the former Harris residence
began on November 25, 1929, and completed in 1930. |

The First
National Bank in Niles was organized November 20, 1889, and closed
September 3, 1908. It was succeeded by the Niles Trust Company.
The Niles Trust Company opened in its new Art
Deco building in 1930 in Niles, Ohio, but closed during the Great
Depression when The Niles Trust Company failed to open its doors
on September 28, 1931, with its deposits of millions of dollars
frozen; the building later became the Niles Professional Building,
housing various tenants, and remains a historic downtown landmark
with its original vault still inside, later marketed for new uses
like restaurants or apartments around 2018.and

1930; M.J. Flaherty, vice-president; D.J. Finney, vice-president;
J.D. Waddell, Secretary; R.L. McCorkle, Treasurer; with the Executive

|
Banknotes
from 1900, primarily U.S. National Bank Notes, featured elaborate
designs (Washington crossing the Delare River), local bank names
(like First National Bank of Niles), historical scenes , portraits,
and security text, secured by U.S. bonds, with various denominations
($1-$100+), and were part of the 1882-1902 charter period, distinct
from later Federal Reserve notes but forming the backbone of early
20th-century currency.
National Bank Notes were retired as a currency
type by the U.S. government in the 1930s during the Great Depression
as currency in the U.S. was consolidated into Federal Reserve
Notes, United States Notes, and silver certificates; privately
issued banknotes were eliminated. |
